§ 51933 Sexual Health Education Standards

Key Takeaways

  • •Sex education in schools must be right for the age of the kids and use correct medical facts.
  • •Lessons must be fair and include everyone, no matter their race, gender, or who they like.
  • •Kids should learn about different types of relationships, like same-sex couples, and how to talk to their parents about these topics.
  • •Schools can't teach religion in sex education classes.

Example

A middle school teacher is planning a lesson on relationships.

The teacher must make sure the lesson includes examples of same-sex couples, talks about respect in relationships, and doesn't leave out any students because of their background or abilities. The lesson should also encourage kids to talk to their parents or trusted adults about these topics.
