§ 49480 Student Medication Notification Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If your kid takes medicine every day for a long-term health problem, you must tell the school nurse what medicine it is, how much they take, and who their doctor is.
  • •The school nurse can talk to the doctor and explain to teachers how the medicine might affect your kid’s behavior or health, but only if you say it’s okay.
  • •The school boss (superintendent) has to make sure all parents know about this rule.

Example

Your child takes ADHD medicine every morning and afternoon.

You have to tell the school nurse the name of the medicine, how much your child takes, and the doctor’s name. If you allow it, the nurse can talk to the doctor and tell the teachers what to watch for, like if the medicine makes your child too quiet or hyper.
