§ 49423 Student Medication Self-Administration

Key Takeaways

  • •Kids who need medicine during school can get help from the school nurse or take it themselves if it's a special kind of medicine called auto-injectable epinephrine.
  • •The school needs two notes: one from the doctor saying what medicine the kid needs and how to take it, and one from the parents saying it's okay for the school to help or for the kid to take the medicine themselves.
  • •If a kid uses the medicine the wrong way, like not following the doctor's instructions, they can get in trouble at school.
  • •The notes from the doctor and parents need to be given to the school every year, or more often if the medicine or how much the kid takes changes.

Example

A kid named Alex has bad allergies and needs to carry an EpiPen (auto-injectable epinephrine) at school.

Alex's doctor writes a note saying Alex needs the EpiPen and can use it himself. Alex's parents also write a note saying it's okay for Alex to carry and use the EpiPen. The school keeps these notes and lets Alex have the EpiPen with him. If Alex uses the EpiPen the wrong way, like giving it to a friend to play with, he could get in trouble.
