Key Takeaways

  • •If a kid might have a concussion or head injury during sports, they must stop playing right away and can't play again until a doctor says it's okay.
  • •The kid must do a special 7-day recovery plan if the doctor says they have a concussion.
  • •Every year, the kid and their parent must sign a paper about concussion risks before the kid can play sports.
  • •This rule doesn't apply to gym class or sports during the regular school day.

Example

A student gets hit in the head during a soccer game and feels dizzy.

The coach must take the student out of the game immediately. The student can't play again until a doctor checks them and writes a note saying it's safe. If the doctor says it's a concussion, the student must follow a 7-day recovery plan before playing soccer again.

The California Interscholastic Federation is urged to work in consultation with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine to develop and adopt rules and protocols to implement this paragraph. (2) On a yearly basis, a concussion and head injury information sheet shall be signed and returned by the athlete and the athlete’s parent or guardian before the athlete initiates practice or competition.
