§ 48415 Private School Attendance Verification

Key Takeaways

  • •Kids going to private school don’t have to go to public high school, but only if the private school follows the rules.
  • •The private school must send a special paper (affidavit) every year to the state to prove it’s a real school.
  • •The school district checks if the private school sent the paper, but this check doesn’t mean the district says the school is ‘good’ or ‘approved’.
  • •If the private school doesn’t send the paper, kids might still have to go to public school.

Example

A family wants to send their 16-year-old to a small private school instead of public high school.

The private school must send a yearly paper to the state saying it’s a real school. The school district checks if this paper was sent. If the school didn’t send it, the family’s kid might have to go to public school instead.

The verification required by this section shall not be construed as an evaluation, recognition, approval, or endorsement of any private school or course. (Enacted by Stats. 1976, Ch. 1010.)
