§ 35200 School District Debt Liability

Key Takeaways

  • •School districts must pay for things they agreed to buy or do, like teacher salaries, but only if they have enough money for that school year.
  • •If the school district spends more money than it has, it doesn’t have to pay for those extra things.
  • •Money moved to a new school district’s account counts as money they can use for bills from the previous school year.

Example

A school district promises to buy new computers for classrooms but runs out of money before paying.

If the school district didn’t have enough money in its budget for the computers, it doesn’t have to pay for them. But if it had the money, it must pay the bill.
