§ 24402 Retirement Benefit Adjustments

Key Takeaways

  • •Retirement and disability payments get bigger over time because of something called a 'benefit improvement factor'.
  • •If someone dies and their family gets money from their retirement plan, those payments also get bigger using the same factor.
  • •The increase doesn’t apply to certain types of annuities that are based on the money you’ve already put into your retirement account.

Example

A retired teacher gets a monthly payment from their pension plan.

Every year, the teacher’s payment goes up a little bit because of the 'benefit improvement factor'. This helps the teacher keep up with the cost of living.
