§ 23203 Redeposit Refunded Retirement Contributions

Key Takeaways

  • •If you took out your retirement money early and want to put it back, you have to pay it all back with interest before you retire.
  • •If the retirement system doesn't tell you how much you owe in time, you get 30 extra workdays to pay after they send you the bill.
  • •You can pay the money back all at once or in small monthly payments over up to 10 years, but each payment (except the last one) must be at least $25.

Example

Imagine you took out $10,000 from your retirement fund when you left a job. Now you want to put it back so you can get a bigger retirement check later.

You have to pay back the $10,000 plus interest. If the retirement office doesn’t tell you the total amount before you retire, you get 30 extra workdays to pay after they send you the bill. You can pay it all at once or in small monthly chunks over 10 years, but each payment must be at least $25.
