§ 23200 Redepositing Retirement Contributions

Key Takeaways

  • •If you took out your retirement money but then go back to work for the same system, you can put the money back in and keep earning retirement benefits.
  • •If your ex-spouse took out their share of your retirement money, you can put that money back in too, as long as you’re not already getting retirement payments.
  • •If you don’t put all the money back, you’ll only get partial credit for the time you worked, based on how much you put back.

Example

Imagine you worked for a school for 5 years, then quit and took out your retirement savings. Later, you get hired by the same school again.

You can choose to put that money back into your retirement account, and it will keep growing like it never left. If you only put back half the money, you’ll only get credit for 2.5 years of work instead of 5.
