§ 18962 Library Property Ownership

Key Takeaways

  • •If a library gets stuff (like books or buildings), the city where the library is usually owns it.
  • •The city can take care of legal stuff (like lawsuits) for the library's property.
  • •This only works if the person who gave the property didn’t say who should own it.

Example

A person donates a bunch of books to the town library but doesn’t say who should own them.

The city where the library is will own those books. If someone sues over the books, the city handles it.
