§ 17486 Playground Land Disposal

Key Takeaways

  • •This law applies to school land that the school board wants to sell or rent.
  • •The land must have been used as a playground, sports field, or outdoor fun space for at least 8 years.
  • •There should be no other public land nearby that can replace it for kids and the community to play.
  • •The city or local government must agree that the land is needed for play and fun before it can be sold or rented.

Example

Imagine your school has a big soccer field that kids have used for over 8 years. The school board wants to sell it to build a mall.

Before selling, the school must check if there’s another park or field nearby where kids can play. If there isn’t, the city must say it’s okay to sell because the field is important for the community.
