§ 17470 School Property Sale Notice

Key Takeaways

  • •If a school district wants to sell land it bought from someone, it must tell the old owner about the sale meeting at least 60 days before.
  • •The school district has to send this notice by certified mail so the old owner gets it for sure.
  • •The old owner doesn’t get a special chance to buy the land back, even if they want to.

Example

A school district bought a piece of land from a farmer 10 years ago. Now, the district wants to sell that land to build a new school.

The school district must send the farmer a letter by certified mail at least 60 days before the meeting about selling the land. The farmer will know about the sale, but the district doesn’t have to let him buy it back first.
