Key Takeaways

  • •You can't lease or lease-purchase something for longer than it's expected to last, and never more than 10 years.
  • •If you have a lease (not lease-purchase), you and the owner can agree to renew it, but the new price can't go up more than 12% each year.
  • •Even with renewals, the total time for the lease can't be more than 10 years.
  • •Old contracts made before April 22, 1975, are still valid and follow their original rules.

Example

You lease a copy machine for your small business.

The lease can't last longer than the machine is expected to work, say 8 years, and it can't go past 10 years even if you renew it. If you renew, the new price can't be more than 12% higher each year than what you paid before.
