§ 15793 Annexed Territory Valuation Adjustment

This law says that when land moves from a non‑state‑funded school district to a state‑funded one, the value of that land is added to the state‑funded district’s total value for certain calculations.

Key Takeaways

  • •When land switches from a non‑state‑funded district to a state‑funded one, its value gets added to the state‑funded district’s total.
  • •The added value is used in the same calculations that the state already does for school funding (see sections 15729‑15733).
  • •The rule started working on January 1, 1998.

Example

A piece of land that used to belong to a private school district is moved into a public school district.

The value of that land is counted together with the rest of the public district’s land when the state does its math for funding and taxes.

How to Calculate

Total Valuation = Valuation of State‑Aided District + Assessed Valuation of Annexed Territory

  1. Find the current total value of the state‑aided district (the money the land is worth).
  2. Find the assessed value of the land that is being moved into the district.
  3. Add the two numbers together to get the new total value.

A public school district is worth $10,000,000. A nearby piece of land worth $2,000,000 is moved into the district.

Result: Total Valuation = 10,000,000 + 2,000,000 = $12,000,000
