§ 8741 Land Surveyor Certification Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •To become a land surveyor-in-training, you must pass the first part of the exam, have at least 2 years of school or work in land surveying (or a mix of both), and not have done bad things that would stop you from getting a license.
  • •You don’t need to prove your school or work experience to the board—they just ask you to sign a paper saying you’re telling the truth.
  • •To become a full land surveyor, you must pass the second part of the exam, meet extra rules (like more school or work), and know a lot about surveying laws and property lines.
  • •If you’re already a licensed civil engineer, you don’t need to be a surveyor-in-training first.

Example

John wants to become a land surveyor-in-training. He went to college for land surveying for 1 year and worked part-time as a surveyor for another year.

John can apply because he has a total of 2 years of school and work experience. He also needs to pass the first exam and sign a paper saying he’s telling the truth about his background.
