§ 7837 Geologist Subordinate Exemption

Key Takeaways

  • •If you work under a registered geologist or geophysicist, you don’t need your own registration.
  • •You can’t do geology or geophysics work on your own or call yourself a 'professional geologist' or 'professional geophysicist' unless you’re registered.
  • •This rule is only for people who are assistants or helpers to registered geologists or geophysicists.

Example

You work as an assistant to a registered geologist, helping them collect rock samples and record data.

You don’t need to be registered because you’re only helping the geologist. But if you start giving advice or doing geology work on your own, you’d be breaking the law.

§ 7837 Geologist Subordinate Exemption

A subordinate to a geologist or geophysicist registered under this chapter, insofar as he or she acts solely in that capacity, is exempt from registration under the provisions of this chapter. This exemption, however, does not permit any subordinate to practice geology or geophysics for others in his or her own right or to use the title “professional geologist” or “professional geophysicist.” (Amended by Stats. 2005, Ch. 657, Sec. 15. Effective January 1, 2006.)
