§ 25248 Mendocino Wine Labeling Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •If wine is made in a special area in Mendocino County, the label must say 'Mendocino County' in a certain font size.
  • •The label rule doesn't apply if the special area's name already includes 'Mendocino'.
  • •This rule starts for wines bottled on or after January 1, 2023.
  • •If someone breaks this rule, they can lose their wine license but won't get other punishments.

Example

A winery in Mendocino County makes wine from grapes grown in a small, special area called 'Anderson Valley'.

The wine label must say 'Mendocino County' in a font size that's at least 2mm for big bottles or 1mm for small bottles. If they don't do this, they could lose their license to sell wine.
