§ 25247 Monterey Wine Labeling Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If a wine is made in a special area inside Monterey County, its label must say 'Monterey County' in a certain font size.
  • •The label rule doesn’t apply if the wine’s special area is already called 'Monterey'.
  • •This rule started for wines bottled after January 1, 2019.
  • •Breaking this rule can get a wine seller’s license taken away, but no other big punishments.

Example

A winery in Monterey County makes wine from grapes grown in a small, special area called 'Santa Lucia Highlands'.

The wine label must say 'Monterey County' in a font size that’s easy to read. If they don’t, the winery could lose its license to sell wine.
