§ 2055 M.D. Title Use

Key Takeaways

  • •Only doctors who get a special certificate from the Medical Board of California can use 'M.D.' after their name.
  • •No other rules or laws can change this—if you have the certificate, you can use 'M.D.'
  • •This rule was updated in 1989 to make it clear.

Example

A doctor finishes medical school and gets their certificate from the Medical Board of California.

Now they can write 'M.D.' after their name on their office sign or business cards because the law says so.
