§ 891 Juvenile Camp Construction Funding

Key Takeaways

  • •The state helps pay for building or improving camps for kids who got in trouble, but only up to half the cost.
  • •The state won’t pay more than $3,000 for each bed in the camp, and no camp can have more than 100 beds.
  • •The money can be used for new buildings, fixing old ones, or even leasing property, but not for buying land or paying architects.
  • •Counties have to ask the state for this money in a special way, and the state decides how and when to pay.

Example

A county wants to build a new camp for 50 kids who got in trouble.

The state will help pay for it, but only up to half the cost. If the camp costs $400,000 to build, the state might give $200,000. But the state also won’t pay more than $3,000 per bed, so for 50 beds, the most the state will give is $150,000 ($3,000 x 50). The county has to follow the rules and ask the state for the money the right way.
