§ 606 Juvenile Court Criminal Exemption

Key Takeaways

  • •If a kid gets in trouble and the case goes to juvenile court, they usually can't be punished like an adult for the same problem.
  • •The juvenile court can decide to send the kid to adult court if they think the kid shouldn't be treated as a minor.
  • •If the case is moved to adult court, then the kid can be tried as an adult.

Example

A 16-year-old gets caught stealing a bike. The case goes to juvenile court.

The juvenile court will handle the case, and the teen won't be tried as an adult unless the court decides they should be. If the court moves the case to adult court, then the teen could face adult punishment.
