§ 4496 Patient Work Therapy Programs

Key Takeaways

  • •Hospitals can create special workplaces called 'sheltered workshops' for patients.
  • •These workshops help patients learn and practice real job skills in a safe place.
  • •Doctors and staff can watch how patients work to understand their strengths and what they’re good at.
  • •The work done in these workshops should be as good as work done in real factories or companies.

Example

A patient in a state hospital joins a workshop where they assemble small parts, like putting together toy cars.

The workshop helps the patient learn how to follow instructions, work carefully, and stay focused, just like in a real job. The doctors can see if the patient is good at this kind of work and if they enjoy it. The toys made in the workshop must be well-made, just like toys sold in stores.

§ 4496 Patient Work Therapy Programs

Subject to rules and regulations adopted by the department, the hospital director may establish a sheltered workshop at a state hospital to provide patients with remunerative work performed in a setting which simulates that of industry and is performed in such a manner as to meet standards of industrial quality. The workshop shall be so operated as to provide the treatment staff with a realistic atmosphere for assessing patients’ capabilities in work settings, and to provide opportunities to strengthen and expand patient interests and aptitudes.
