§ 17801 Standard Charity Care Contract

Key Takeaways

  • •Hospitals that don't make money for owners must promise to keep helping poor people for free, just like they did before.
  • •The hospital and the state make a deal using a special paper (contract) that the state writes.
  • •Either the hospital or the state can stop the deal, but they have to tell the other side 60 days before they quit.

Example

A small town hospital that helps sick people for free signs a paper with the state.

The hospital promises to keep giving free care to poor folks, just like it always has. If the hospital wants to stop the deal, it has to tell the state 60 days early.
