§ 15001 Warrant Payment Deadlines

Key Takeaways

  • •If you get a check for help from the government, you have to cash it within 6 months. If you don't, it becomes worthless.
  • •If you can't cash the check yourself, someone else (like a family member) can do it for you if they follow the rules.
  • •The rules for replacing a lost or expired check also apply to the person you assign to cash it or your family if you pass away.

Example

You receive a government check to help pay for food, but you forget about it and leave it in a drawer for 8 months.

The check is now worthless because you didn't cash it within 6 months. You can't use it anymore, and you might need to ask for a new one if the rules allow it.
