§ 227 Water Reservoir Project Feasibility

Key Takeaways

  • •The government can check if a place is good for building a water storage (like a big lake or tank) to hold extra water from floods or rivers.
  • •They can figure out if building it is a good idea, how much water it can hold, and what land could use that water for farming.
  • •They can also guess how much money it would cost to build.

Example

A river often floods a town, wasting lots of water.

The government can study if building a big lake nearby would help save that flood water. They check if it’s a good spot, how much water it can store, and if farms around could use that water later. They also calculate how much it would cost to build.

The department may investigate any natural situation available for reservoirs or reservoir systems for gathering and distributing flood or other water not under beneficial use in any stream, stream system, lake, or other body of water. The department may ascertain the feasibility of projects for such reservoirs or reservoir systems, the supply of water that may thereby be made available, and the extent and character of the areas that may be thereby irrigated. The department may estimate the cost of such projects. (Enacted by Stats. 1943, Ch. 368.)
