§ 4465 Vehicle Registration Owner Information

Key Takeaways

  • •If you own a car, you can ask the DMV for info about who it's registered to, like their address and license plate number. They might charge you a small fee for this.
  • •The DMV must follow federal rules to help stop car theft. This means they share car info with a national system so people can check if a car is stolen or has problems before buying it.
  • •By 2010, the DMV had to make sure anyone could easily check a car’s history, like if it was stolen or had a bad title, before buying it.

Example

You want to buy a used car from someone online.

You can ask the DMV for the car’s info to make sure the seller is the real owner and the car isn’t stolen. The DMV will give you details like the license plate and owner’s address, but you might have to pay a small fee.
