§ 25651 Motorcycle Headlamp Visibility Requirements

This law says that motorcycles must have headlights bright enough to see people or other vehicles at certain distances, depending on how fast the motorcycle is going.

Key Takeaways

  • •Motorcycle headlights must be bright enough to see objects at certain distances based on speed.
  • •The faster you go, the farther ahead your headlight must let you see.
  • •If your motorcycle has a single-beam headlight, it must be aimed so the brightest part of the light doesn't shine higher than the center of the lamp at 25 feet ahead.

Example

Riding a motorcycle at night

If you're riding your motorcycle at 30 mph at night, your headlight must be strong enough to let you see a person or another vehicle at least 200 feet ahead.

How to Calculate

Distance = 100 feet (if speed < 25 mph), 200 feet (if 25 mph ≤ speed ≤ 35 mph), 300 feet (if speed > 35 mph)

  1. Check the speed of the motorcycle.
  2. If the speed is less than 25 mph, the headlight must reveal objects at least 100 feet away.
  3. If the speed is between 25 mph and 35 mph, the headlight must reveal objects at least 200 feet away.
  4. If the speed is greater than 35 mph, the headlight must reveal objects at least 300 feet away.

Result: The headlight must be bright enough to see a person or vehicle 300 feet ahead.
