§ 2505 Staggered Hazardous Materials Licenses

This law lets the government give out special licenses for carrying dangerous stuff (like gas or chemicals) that last between 6 to 18 months instead of the usual 1 year. After that, the license goes back to lasting 1 year, and the cost is adjusted if the license is shorter or longer than a year.

Key Takeaways

  • •This only applies to licenses for carrying dangerous stuff (like gas or chemicals).
  • •The first license can last 6 to 18 months, but after that, it’s always 12 months.
  • •If the license is shorter or longer than 12 months, the cost is adjusted to be fair.
  • •This rule started in 1982, so it doesn’t apply to older licenses.

Example

A truck driver gets a license to carry gasoline.

If the license is given for 12 months, it costs the normal price. But if it’s given for only 6 months, the driver pays half the normal price. After the first time, the license will always last 12 months and cost the full price.

How to Calculate

Fee = (Normal 12-month fee) × (Number of months licensed / 12)

  1. Find the normal fee for a 12-month license.
  2. Count how many months the special license will last (between 6 and 18).
  3. Divide the number of months by 12 to get a fraction.
  4. Multiply the normal fee by this fraction to get the adjusted fee.

A license normally costs $120 for 12 months, but this time it’s for 9 months.

Result: $120 × (9 / 12) = $90
