§ 11103 Driving School Insurance Requirements

This law says driving schools and their teachers must have special car insurance to cover accidents during driving lessons. The insurance must pay at least $150,000 for one person's injuries, $300,000 total if more people get hurt, and $50,000 for property damage.

Key Takeaways

  • •Driving schools and teachers must have insurance for accidents during lessons.
  • •The insurance must cover at least $150,000 for one person's injuries or $300,000 if more people are hurt.
  • •It must also cover $50,000 for property damage, like fixing another car.
  • •The school must show proof of this insurance to the government and can't cancel it without giving 30 days' notice.

Example

A student driver accidentally crashes into another car during a lesson.

The driving school's insurance must pay for the other driver's injuries and car repairs. If one person is hurt, the insurance covers up to $150,000 for their medical bills. If two people are hurt, the insurance covers up to $300,000 total. The other car's repairs are covered up to $50,000.

How to Calculate

The law sets fixed amounts, so no calculation is needed. The required coverage is: $150,000 per person for bodily injury, $300,000 total per accident for bodily injury, and $50,000 per accident for property damage.

  1. Check if the accident involves one person or more.
  2. If one person is hurt, the insurance covers up to $150,000 for their injuries.
  3. If more than one person is hurt, the insurance covers up to $300,000 total for all injuries.
  4. For property damage (like fixing another car), the insurance covers up to $50,000.

During a driving lesson, the student crashes into another car. Two people in the other car are hurt, and their car needs $30,000 in repairs.

Result: The insurance will cover up to $300,000 for the two people's injuries and up to $50,000 for their car repairs.
