§ 99271 Retirement System Funding Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Bus or train companies can get money from the government only if they have enough money saved to pay for their workers' retirement.
  • •If they don’t have enough money saved, they must have an approved plan to save enough within 40 years.
  • •‘Fully funded’ means they have enough money right now to pay all the retirement benefits their workers have earned or will earn.

Example

A city bus company wants money from the government to buy new buses.

The government will only give them money if the bus company has already saved enough to pay for all their drivers' retirement. If not, they need a plan to save that money in the next 40 years.
