Key Takeaways

  • •Power companies with nuclear plants must tell the government how much it will cost to close them down safely.
  • •They have to explain how new rules, tech, or money changes might affect the cost.
  • •They must update this cost guess regularly, as asked by the government.

Example

A power company owns a nuclear plant in California.

The company must give the government a report saying how much money it will take to shut down the plant safely when it’s old. If new safety rules come out, they have to explain how that changes the cost.
