§ 8030 Guy Wire Insulation Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Guy wires or cables attached to poles with electricity must be insulated at specific points to prevent accidents.
  • •The insulation must be placed between 4 to 8 feet from the top of the wire and at least 8 feet above the ground.
  • •If multiple guy wires are on the same pole, they must be spaced at least 1 foot apart vertically.
  • •No insulation is needed at the bottom of the wire if it's attached to a grounded anchor or if the pole is made of grounded steel and carries very high voltage (over 15,000 volts).

Example

A utility company installs guy wires to support a pole carrying electric cables in a neighborhood.

The company must ensure the guy wires are insulated 5 feet from the top and 8 feet above the ground. If they attach two guy wires to the same pole, they must space them at least 1 foot apart vertically. If the wires are attached to a grounded anchor at the bottom, no insulation is needed there.

Where two or more guy wires or guy cables are attached to the same pole and same anchorage pole there shall be at least one foot, vertical space, between the points of attachment. No insulation shall be required at the lower end of a guy wire or guy cable where it is attached to a grounded anchor. Where guy wires or guy cables are attached to a pole or structure of steel or other conducting material supporting wires or cables conducting in excess of 15,000 volts where the pole or structure is thoroughly grounded no insulation shall be required at any point in the guy wire or guy cable. This section does not apply to guy wires or guy cables attached to poles carrying no wire or cable other than signal wires or cables and which are situated outside the corporate limits of a city.
