§ 5384 Passenger Carrier Permit Types

Key Takeaways

  • •You need a special permit to drive people around for money, depending on what kind of service you offer.
  • •If you only drive small groups (like in a van with fewer than 15 seats), you get a 'P' permit.
  • •If you do sightseeing tours where people go and come back, you get an 'S' permit.
  • •If you drive people for specific jobs (like farm workers or school kids) or as part of another business, you get a 'Z' permit.

Example

You start a small business taking kids to school in a 12-seat van.

Since your van has fewer than 15 seats and you’re driving kids under a contract with a school, you need a 'P' permit.
