§ 2906 Municipal Utility Customer Oversight

Key Takeaways

  • •The law lets cities control how public utilities (like water or electricity companies) treat their customers.
  • •Cities cannot control things like where utility poles or wires are placed on streets.
  • •Cities also cannot control how fast buses or trains go within the city.

Example

Your electricity company wants to raise prices for everyone in your town.

The city can step in and say no to the price increase because they have the power to protect customers. But if the company wants to put up new power lines on your street, the city can’t stop them just because they don’t like where the lines go.
