§ 12899 Board Tax Assessment Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The board decides how much tax to charge by September (or the next workday if it's a holiday).
  • •They use the property values given by the county to figure out the tax rate.
  • •The tax rate is set as cents per $100 of property value to get the money they need.
  • •Once they set the rate, it becomes the official tax everyone has to pay.

Example

Your town needs $500,000 to fix all the roads. The board looks at all the property values in town, which add up to $100,000,000. They decide how much tax to charge each property owner to get the $500,000.

The board sets a tax rate based on how much money they need and the total value of all the property in town. They have to do this by the first week of September. Once they set the rate, that’s the tax everyone pays.
