§ 102020 Definition Of Person

This law defines the word "person" to include many types of groups and representatives, but it does not include government agencies.

Key Takeaways

  • •The term "person" covers individuals and most organizations like companies, partnerships, and trusts.
  • •It also covers people who act for those groups, such as trustees or receivers.
  • •Government agencies are excluded from this definition.

Example

A local business hires a contractor to fix its roof, and the contractor gets injured on the job.

Because the contractor's company is a "firm" or "corporation," it is considered a "person" under this rule, so the business must follow the law that applies to persons, even though the contractor is not a government agency.
