§ 1215 Delivery By Mail

This law tells you the ways you can send official papers—by regular mail, by handing them to the person, or by email if the person has said it's okay.

Key Takeaways

  • •Mail is okay if you put the paper in a sealed envelope with proper postage and address it to the person's home or business.
  • •Personal delivery works when you hand the paper directly to the person.
  • •Email can only be used if the person has signed a special form saying they want electronic delivery, and it can't replace mail that must be certified or registered.

Example

A landlord needs to give a tenant a notice about a rent increase.

The landlord can mail the notice to the tenant's home, hand it to the tenant in person, or email it only if the tenant has signed a form agreeing to get emails for legal notices.
