§ 1672 Penalties For Violations

This law says that if you break sections 1670 or 1671, you can be punished very harshly – up to death or life in prison if someone dies, life without parole if someone is seriously hurt, or a few years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine if no one is killed or badly injured.

Key Takeaways

  • •If the illegal act causes a death, the punishment can be death or life without parole.
  • •If the act causes a serious injury, the punishment is life without parole.
  • •If no death or serious injury occurs, the punishment is 2‑6 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both; it’s harsher (3‑7 years) if the act was meant to hurt war or defense efforts.

Example

A worker at a factory that makes military equipment deliberately shuts off safety equipment, causing a co‑worker to die.

Because the illegal act caused a death, the law says the person can be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.
