§ 1254 District Annexation Petition Requirements

This law explains how to start a petition to add new land to a district and requires a hearing with the county board.

Key Takeaways

  • •The petition must be sent to the county board of supervisors.
  • •It must be signed by the required number of qualified registered voters.
  • •It must state the annexation, request a hearing, and describe the new territory's boundaries.
  • •The new territory can include both incorporated and unincorporated parts.

Example

A group of neighbors wants to add a new housing area to their city district.

They must write a petition that says they want to annex the land, ask the county board to hold a hearing on the question, and give a clear description of which parts of the land are already in the city and which are not. The petition also needs to be signed by enough registered voters as required by the law.
