§ 1197 District Board Veteran Requirements

• •The board must have exactly five members.
• •All members must be registered voters who live in the district.
• •A majority (at least three) of the seats must be filled by veterans.
• •If a veteran seat is empty, it is filled at the next election for that seat.
• •Members are unpaid but can be reimbursed for actual expenses they incur while doing board business.

A small community holds an election for a new board. Three of the five seats must go to veterans. If only two veterans run, the third veteran seat stays empty until the next election, when another veteran can be elected.

The board will have five members who live in the area and are registered voters. At least three of them have to be veterans. If a veteran spot is empty, the community waits until the next election to fill it. The members don’t get a salary, but the town can pay them back for things like travel or supplies needed for board work.
