§ 1683 Farm Labor Contractor Licensing

This law says you need a special license to hire farm workers. If you don't have one, you have to pay money as punishment.

Key Takeaways

  • •You must have a license to hire farm workers.
  • •If you don't have a license, you pay money for each worker and each day they worked.
  • •The more times you break the rule, the more money you have to pay.
  • •The money collected goes to help farm workers.

Example

A farmer hires 10 people to pick strawberries but doesn't have the right license.

The farmer will have to pay $100 for each worker plus $100 for every day they worked without a license. If they worked for 5 days, the farmer pays $100 x 10 workers + $100 x 5 days = $1,500.

How to Calculate

Penalty = (Dollars per worker x Number of workers) + (Dollars per day x Number of days)

  1. Find out how many workers were hired without a license.
  2. Find out how many days the violation lasted.
  3. Multiply the dollars per worker by the number of workers.
  4. Multiply the dollars per day by the number of days.
  5. Add the two amounts together to get the total penalty.

A person hires 5 farmworkers without a license for 3 days (first-time violation).

Result: $100 x 5 workers = $500 + $100 x 3 days = $300. Total penalty = $800
