§ 9677 Building Permit Compliance Exemption

Key Takeaways

  • •If a building was built legally when it was first made, it won’t get punished under new rules.
  • •The building must still follow health and safety laws to avoid trouble.
  • •Old buildings get a pass on new rules if they were fine when built.

Example

A house was built in 1960 and followed all the rules back then. Now, there’s a new law saying all houses must have a certain type of fire alarm.

The old house won’t get in trouble for not having the new fire alarm if it was built the right way in 1960. But it still has to follow health and safety rules, like not having mold or broken stairs.
