§ 9090 Zone Formation Procedures

Key Takeaways

  • •A group in charge (like a school board) can create special zones to offer different services or raise extra money in certain areas.
  • •They must hold a public meeting to talk about it and let people know ahead of time.
  • •People in the area can also ask for a new zone by signing a petition if at least 10% of voters agree.
  • •The group must explain why the zone is needed, what it will do, and how it will be paid for.

Example

A school district wants to add more after-school programs in one neighborhood but not others.

The school board can create a special zone for that neighborhood. They must tell everyone about it in a public meeting and explain how the programs will be paid for. If people in that neighborhood don’t want it, they can try to stop it by signing a petition.
