§ 80690 Pollution Cost Overrun Insurance

Key Takeaways

  • •This law is about special insurance for cleaning up pollution. If cleaning up costs more than expected, this insurance helps pay the extra money.
  • •The insurance must cover all extra costs that go over the planned cleanup cost.
  • •The insurance must last as long as the cleanup takes, but not for the maintenance after cleanup is done.
  • •You might have to pay up to 25% of the planned cleanup cost yourself before the insurance starts paying.

Example

A company plans to clean up an old gas station that leaked fuel into the ground. They think it will cost $100,000 to clean up, but the actual cost ends up being $150,000.

The insurance would cover the extra $50,000 that went over the planned $100,000. But the company might have to pay the first $25,000 (25% of $100,000) themselves before the insurance helps with the rest.
