§ 80000 Orphan Share Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •This law is about money set aside to help pay for cleaning up messes when the people who made the mess can't pay.
  • •The money comes from a special fund called the 'Orphan Share Reimbursement Trust Fund'.
  • •An 'orphan share' is the part of the cleanup cost that no one can pay because those responsible are broke or gone.

Example

A factory pollutes a river but then goes out of business. No one is left to pay for cleaning up the river.

The law says money from the special fund can be used to help pay for cleaning up the river because the factory can't pay its share.
