§ 79165 Local Hazardous Substance Cleanup

Key Takeaways

  • •If a city or county asks to clean up a dangerous mess (like chemicals or waste) and the boss (director) says yes, they can take charge.
  • •The city or county must follow a special cleanup plan that’s already been approved.
  • •The city or county does the cleanup job instead of the state doing it.

Example

A gas station leaks bad chemicals into the ground, making the area unsafe.

If the city asks the state for permission to clean it up and gets approved, the city can handle the cleanup instead of waiting for the state to do it. They must follow the official cleanup plan.
