§ 78875 Emergency Hazardous Substance Response

Key Takeaways

  • •The government can use special emergency money to quickly fix or stop dangerous situations caused by fires, explosions, or people getting hurt by harmful chemicals.
  • •They can make quick deals (even just by talking) to get help fast, but these deals can't cost more than $10,000 if it's just a spoken agreement.
  • •The deals can include renting tools, hiring workers, or buying stuff needed to fix the problem.
  • •If people have to move because of the danger, the government can pay up to $1,000 to help with their moving costs.

Example

A big truck crashes and spills dangerous chemicals on the road. The chemicals could hurt people or cause a fire.

The government can quickly spend emergency money to clean up the chemicals, hire workers, and rent equipment to stop the danger. They can even make a quick deal over the phone to get help fast, as long as it doesn’t cost more than $10,000. If people nearby have to leave their homes because of the chemicals, the government can give them up to $1,000 to help with moving.
