§ 78310 State Bond Payment Obligations

Key Takeaways

  • •The state of California promises to pay back money it borrows by selling bonds.
  • •The state must collect extra money every year to pay back these bonds, just like it collects other taxes.
  • •If the state borrows money this way, it has to pay it back on time, no matter what.

Example

Imagine California needs money to build new schools, so it borrows $100 million by selling bonds.

The state must now collect extra money from taxes every year to pay back that $100 million, plus interest, just like you’d pay back a loan. If it doesn’t, it’s breaking the law.
