§ 5460 Contamination Abatement Orders

Key Takeaways

  • •Health officials can order people to clean up pollution or contamination right away.
  • •If someone doesn’t follow the order, officials can take them to court to make them stop.
  • •Officials must help people follow the order, even by finding money to fix the problem.

Example

A factory is dumping dirty water into a river, making it unsafe.

Health officials can tell the factory to stop and clean it up. If the factory ignores them, officials can sue to force them to stop. They also have to help the factory find money to fix the problem.
