§ 53557 Bond Investment Earnings Management

Key Takeaways

  • •This law lets the state keep bond money separate to follow federal tax rules.
  • •The state can use the extra money earned from investments to pay back the federal government if needed.
  • •The goal is to keep the bonds tax-free and save money for California.

Example

California sells bonds to build schools. The money from those bonds earns extra cash when invested.

The state can put that extra cash in a special account. If the federal government says, 'You earned too much, give some back,' California can use this account to pay them. This keeps the bonds tax-free and avoids trouble.
